Food gives us everything we need to be healthy and strong.
Food gives us energy to play and work; it builds and repairs our body, and helps us recover from illness. All these functions are performed by the essential nutrients present in food which are: Proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. Let us learn about each of these nutrients in detail.
Proteins
Proteins help in building new cells and repairing damaged body parts. So, proteins are aptly called body building nutrients.
Proteins are present in almost all food items. But, foods like milk, cheese, meat, eggs and pulses are very rich in proteins.
Carbohydrates
The energy our body needs to perform various actions comes mainly from carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are called energy giving nutrients.
Carbohydrates are found in the form of sugar and starch. Sugar is a simple form of carbohydrates. It gives us energy instantly. Starch is a complex form of carbohydrates.
Fruits, sugarcane, honey, beetroot, rice, maize, wheat, corn, potato, chocolates, etc. are rich in carbohydrates.
Fats
Milk, meat, oil, butter, ghee, nuts, etc. are rich in fats.
Fats are also called energy giving nutrients, as they are a source of energy to the body.
Fats provide about twice the energy that can be derived from equal amounts of carbohydrates or proteins.
Vitamins
There are two kinds of vitamins; water soluble vitamins and fat soluble vitamins.
Water soluble vitamins are found in citrus fruits, unpolished cereals, and green vegetables. They are vitamin C and B complex.
Minerals
Minerals include calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium, iodine, copper, iron, zinc, etc. They are inorganic elements. Plants take in minerals from the soil and store it in the food they prepare. Minerals enter our body through the food we eat.
